Old Masters

The term ‘Old Masters’ describes the well-known European artists, primarily painters, who worked from the Renaissance to 1800.

The phrase "Old Masters" is believed to have gained popularity in the mid-19th century, especially in Holland. In Dutch, the term "oude meester" (old master) referred to the most renowned artists of the Dutch Golden Age, like Rembrandt van Rijn and Jan van Eyck.

It's not a specific art style or movement but rather a broad category that includes artists from various periods like Gothic Art, the Renaissance, Baroque, and more. Essentially, it encompasses important figures in Western art history like Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Rembrandt.
